About Dominican Republic Politics
Much like the United States, the Dominican Republic has a President and a bicameral Congress: the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.
The Senate has representatives for each province plus the National District, and the president is elected by universal suffrage to a four-year term.
Although there are several political parties, only a handful play a significant role at the national level.
History
The early inhabitants of the island were the Taínos, who had a well-structured society when the Europeans arrived in the 15th century. Since then, Spanish, French, African, and later American influences have shaped a rich cultural blend.
Today, the country is home to more than 10 million people and is known for its music, gastronomy, and warm hospitality.
